It’s a Mod Mod Mod Mod World

04.10.08 at 10:40

I love Mod and retro everything! Love it! Caftans, white boots, Vespas, the Who etc. However, all the hipster Trendy Midtown kids seem to feel the same way. They have their cruisers and vintage mini dresses. All the men’s suit jackets have that classic 60’s collar.

Without further ado, some crazy Mod Linkage!

I found this link from Retro To Go, and fell in love with this online shop! I Love Waterloo has such great retro styling! My favorite is the Pete Retro Bag.

I want a Vespa more than anything! Better mileage, cute as sin, and oh so convenient! But what’s this? An Electric Vespa? How about this electric moped? I gather you can even ride these bad boys on the sidewalk legally. Can’t afford a full sized one? Try this one *giggle*

My all time favorite Sublime Stitching pattern, Scooter Babe.
Get your crazy funky mini dresses here at Atom Retro

I randomly found Red Dress Shoppe one day and fell in love! Cute vintage styling and super affordable! I’m eying the Carnaby dress and the Twiggy Dress. So if you buy the last large, I’ll be sad.

And while I’m on the subject, I just want to say finding vintage for a tall bigger boned girl is VERY hard! Well, until I found Penelopepup Vintage.

And for the perfect shoes, Jeffrey Campbell has great styling! You can get some at Nordstroms or Modcloth

I Wanna Rock!

03.28.08 at 12:17

So, here’s my life lately:

Venture Bros.
[adult swim] swap: Rocking my world! I’m done with 1 item, half way on another and just need to settle down and get started on the rest. I plan on mailing my taxes and my swap items on the same day. My Partner? She’s awesome! She loves the Monarch too. Match made in heaven.

Sock Wars
Sock Wars III: like a rolling stone! It all starts May 2nd, the build up is killing me! If that doesn’t the socks I get in the mail will. I’m signed up and SUPER excited. I hope I remember how to knit a sock, it’s been years since I’ve turned a heel…

Carly Smithson
Carly Smithson: is a stone fox! Normally, I avoid American Idol like the plague.. but I managed to catch Carly singing and fell in love with her. She’s so talented, cute, and different. Maybe it’s because she’s like my alter ego, but she seems like someone I would want to be friends with… she seems so sweet and nice. And she sang Total Eclipse of the Heart.

Rock n Roll camp for girls Girls Rock DVD
Rock n’ Roll Camp for Girls: is the most rockin’ thing ever! I know… Rock camp?! Some say true musicians don’t go to rock camp. Well, I’m not a true musician! I fell in love with a $60 guitar because it’s robin egg blue, and the first song I’ve learned to play on it is Rod Stewart’s “Reason to Believe”(which is quite simple, by the way). But Rock Camp isn’t just for 18 and under girls, the camp does a fundraising Rock Camp for Ladies. For $350 you can learn or get advanced instruction for Voice, Guitar, Keyboard, Bass, or Drums. I’m thinking of signing up for the October session. My choice is voice. I’m a bit rhythm dyslexic, I do fine for awhile then accidently switch it. And trust me, just because you’re good at Guitar Hero doesn’t mean you can play guitar (See the Rod Stewart bit above for proof) I’ve always wanted to ROCK! And at the camp you even learn songwriting, promotional stuff, and you perform a song at the end. Sign me up! I’m totally gonna rock!

Rock n’ Roll Camp for Girls has been featured a ton of times on NPR now, but it is totally something I wish they had when I was younger. They have a documentary out and about. You can learn more about the movie here.

Rock and Roll, Chickadees!

[adult swim]… how I adore thee

[adult swim]

Now, many of you may not realize this about me, but I love cartoons… specifically ones aimed at my demographic.

I remember those hot summer days at the pool with my friends, pretending to be mermaids and playing Marco Polo until that whistle blows for the 10 minutes of adult swim. Grrr. We used to say “I can’t wait to be adults, so we could just swim all day!” And then we’d go to the snack shack and get some ice cream sandwiches. Little did we understand what a pain swimming around kids is.

But now I rejoice at the thought of [adult swim]. God Bless Cartoon Network for giving me refuge.

Several years ago I was going through a really hard time in life, and then I discovered some friends that lived around the corner from my house for years (literally). High School chums of my brother. Their house became a refuge, a haven for me. And their friendship made me feel so great! Memories of baking cake with Dylan. Watching Inuyasha and not understanding a thing about it. I was just trying to figure out why a man with cat ears was a dog who was also a demon who wanted to get rid of bad guys…. confusing, huh?

To this day, I never miss a week. It’s one of joys. It still stays as my little safe place where I feel normal, loved, and accepted. And, that is SO not lame!

Now, I’ve joined a swap on craftster for [adult swim] crafts and I couldn’t be more excited! eeeeee!

I’m super excited! I get my partner after this weekend! This is also my first swap, so I’m nervous…

Colbert Crafts!

Dear Stephen Colbert,

I have been mad at you. Disappointed at the least. I mean how can you not do the voice of Professor Impossible?!? I love The Venture Brothers, and I loved YOU in the Venture Brothers, but you decided not to do the third season (click here for source). Then I find out you couldn’t even put your voice to the Harvey Birdman video game! What would that have taken you, a day? I mean, what were you doing when you were off the air because of the writer’s strike? Weren’t you bored? You have fans, you know, who adore you for more than just the Colbert Report.

But you have redeemed yourself. I love you once again. Because last night I’m watching The Colbert Report, and there you are crafting on National TV! My favorite is Clambo.

Thank you Stephen *Sigh*

Sending much affection your crafting way,

ps. If you love Clambo as much as I do, Check out this Googily Eyed Clam tutorial from Colbert Nation

Back to School!

01.19.08 at 12:37

So it’s Saturday morning and my alarm goes off. Something in my head is telling me to keep sleeping. I sit up, think about taking a shower and getting dressed, dreading the thought of bundling up to go outside and interact with people. Grrr. I turn off my alarm, flip over in my nice warm bed and decide, No, I really want to do this. It’s only one day a week for 18 weeks, not that big of a deal I get out of bed, and get ready for school.

I thought school was over?! I graduated a year and a half ago, but something is calling me back! Intermediate sewing classes! I told myself, You don’t have to take it. Just go to the first day, and see how you like it. Well, now I’m SUPER excited and can’t wait to get going! (Notice how many !!! I’ve used so far… not counting those).

I’ve always been kinda lazy when it comes to fitting patterns. I’ve never really had to. I kind of fit after the fact, trying on the garments as I go. This needs to be adjusted here or take this in a bit here and it’s always worked fine, but advanced fitting!!! Yay!

Granted, the projects aren’t the most exciting. A vest (I’m not exactly the vest type, but I’m thinking the short vest from Simplicity 3690 but it needs a welt pocket, so maybe she’ll help me add one in or something), a skirt (with a waistband! I guess its time to get in Vouge [giggle] and make a high waisted shirt using Vogue 8425 [get the giggle now?]), a plaid blouse with short sleeves (I know plaid is in and all… I’m thinking of Built by Wendy 4112) and a V neck knit top (I have a triangle body type, so I know V necks would look good, but I usually don’t rock the V neck..) maybe even underwear or a slip if there is time. I’m hoping for a slip she’ll let me make a fufu petticoat!

All and all, I’m super excited to learn to tricks and to socialize again. Maybe I’ll even get a degree or something… Either way, Super Excited!

~*Happy dance*~

*Happy dance looks a lot like my “New Couch” dance, but not quite as excited

It’s the new year! Now I can show off Christmas stuff!

01.08.08 at 2:34

Ok, so this Christmas I didn’t get everything done that I wanted to. I’ll blame that on the people who broke into my car and stole all the presents that were in there (A record player and microphone stand for Todd) and the fabric I bought (I still don’t understand why they stole my fabric and two bags of polyfill) to make toys for the Salvation army. I wanted to craft to change the world! I wanted to make everybody a little something to make their world a little better. Sadly, that didn’t happen. (Note to self: Next year start working on Christmas presents in March). However, I have finally gotten the majority of photos together of things I did finish. Bunches of photos to prove it!

First though, this is my Hunny, Todd. This is our 12 foot tall BEAUTIFUL Christmas tree. Our ceiling, however, is like 8 feet tall. Why such a big tree? We went Christmas Tree shopping on Christmas Eve morning. We had planned to go earlier, but it just didn’t work out that way. So we’re driving to Home Depot to look for “The Perfect Tree.” The prefect tree is not at Home Depot. I actually wanted a 4 foot tree for our living space. You know, a little Charlie Brown tree, but with more foliage. So, Barb, our bookkeeper told me about this nursery that I’ve always passed by a million times, and they have trees outside, but BIG trees! So we think maybe they’ve got some smaller ones behind the fence inside? They didn’t. But apparently, these big beautiful trees were free for the taking. So Merry Christmas to Us! We went and bought a little hack saw, and our perfect little tree was born (We ended up making 7 feet tall or something…)! It’s a Christmas Miracle, and our tree got to fulfill It’s Christmas Destiny.

Now on to the hemp! Now, before I start, let me tell you, I just adore sewing with hemp! It is a beautiful fabric to work with! I would suggest finding a project, even if it’s bags like these, and make something with it.

The assignment: 35 hemp tote bags with our Design Firm’s logo on the pockets. I designed the size ahead of time after looking at everyone else’s tote bags our there. The seams are all french seams, a little strange I know! But I wanted the seams to be strong and not fray like the Dickens (If the dickens do, in fact, fray)! Also, I used heavy duty thread (8 spools to be exact) and my Janome. The Sewing room was a total mess! My Hunny would come in and call me his little sweatshop worker. Everyday I would sew more. Transferring each bag from one side to the other after finishing sewing the next step. Left to right. Pile 1 to pile 2, then back to pile 1 again. The last week I was working on them, I was buzzing on Red Bull until 2:30 in the morning working on them. But they are lovely!

Wolfe Design bags

Now I know I look a little crazy in the middle picture, but it was 2:30 in the morning, and I’d been drinking a lot of Red Bull. And yes, I’m holding all 35 bags! Those suckers are heavy!

Next, Let me introduce you to Dave. Dave is our Web Designer at work. I got his name in the work Secret Santa. He had addressed ahead of time that if I drew his name to make him something. So I Did! So, without further ado, meet Dave!

He’s felt, he’s adorable, and he’s single (Ladies?!?!) He loved it! First thing Todd said when he saw him, “He really does look like Dave doesn’t he?!” I based this off of the Wee Wonderfuls’ make-a-long doll Archie. I adjusted the hair (obviously) and adjusted the clothing a bit, for a more modern flair. It is a great pattern, by the way. I plan on making my nieces dolls from the patterns since they are so girlie! Maybe with a cute tote bag for them, with pockets they can sit in on the outside and fun clothing for them on the inside….

For more information on Dave (The Man, the Legend) Check him out here

This is the Gift du’jour! I worked so hard on this quilt for my mom for Christmas! Easily as much time as I spent on the tote bags. My previous post about hating to iron? Was because of this quilt. I came across this quilt while blog surfing. I used the tutorial from Hyena in Petticoats. She really makes the quilt seem do-able. And it is, just time consuming. I wanted to make the quilt in colors that would go with my parent’s house now that they are redoing the whole thing. Hopefully, I’ll get an updated photo of the quilt in it’s own setting, versus laying out on the bed at home.

Now when I was finishing up the last few rows, I managed to sew into my finger. A first for me. I don’t even know how it happened! It all happened so fast! All I remember is pain in my finger, I clear thing had popped off my machine, and all that was running through my head was “I better not have broken my bobbin shield! Please! I have to finish this, and I can;t finish it if I broke my machine!” Luckily, it was part of the presser foot which I could snap right back on again, and everything was groovy. And, I was lucky the needle didn’t break off in my finger. It hit the fingernail and broke. Thank you strong fingernails! It did break the nail, but the bad part is, now every time I sew my finger seems to get almost stuck in the machine. *Warning: it’s been almost 3 weeks since the sewn finger incident, below is a nice finger show of how it is healing. And that fingernail polish was really nice looking, but all the band-aids seemed to have peeled a lot off, so it kinda makes the finger look worse than it really is.*

Ouch, my nail

I hope everyone had a Happy and Healthy holiday season. I have one more gift I created to post pictures of, but I’m waiting to receive some photos of the placemats I made my boss, Diane in action! Here’s a sneak peak:

Diane’s Buddha Fabric

Cheers! To a happy, health, and productive New Year!

A Very Busy and Crafty Season

12.12.07 at 17:25

I am exhausted! Let me paint my day for you:

7:30 - Wake up and go to work

8-12:00 - Work Work Work

12-1:00 - Lunch with my baby!

1-5:00 - Go home

5-6:30 - Chill out a little

6:30-2am - Sew/ craft/ work

2am-7:30am - sleep

I recently read an article (really short one) about how many hours we have in our day. According to my calculations, I’m actually working almost 16 hours a day! At least until after Christmas… Then I’ll have 7 hours of leisure time! I am so excited.

Why am I so busy? As I alluded to before, Christmas. I’ve been swimming in a world of hemp and half finished Christmas gifts. And by Half finished, I mean all but 1 of the projects I haven’t started yet. I wish I could show all my plans and progress, but then I’d spoil Christmas for some of my readers! I’m freaking out a little. I will be VERY busy this weekend. I’m making hemp bags for my work to send out as client gifts, and that is taking up the majority of my time.

The good news? I have a week off between Christmas and New Years to finally get items made for my etsy store! I’m really looking forward to that! Yay!

Until we meet again…

So, lately I’ve been watching the Muppet Show season 1. It Brings backs o many memories. I mean, puppets are really neat. there’s this option on the DVD to watch fun muppet facts while you watch the show. It’s really quite cool. Did you know the first Kermit the Frog was made out of a jacket by Jim Hensen’s mom? Also, Jim Hensen took a trip to Europe, which showed him that puppetry can really appeal to adults as well as children. Thus the Muppet Show was born.

Now, I know I share the love of Muppets with many of you. My boyfriend, Todd, just loves the Swedish Chef. Every time he watches him “cook” he gets this little kid smile of face and just giggles. As I watching the show, I myself found myself just smiling. The Muppets makes so many people happy! Puppetry really is an artform.

(I’ll bring it around to sewing, just give me a minute)

Well, I started talking to my friend Omie about the Muppets, and he showed me Project Puppet . How great would it be to make a puppet? I Just love their gallery! Apparently there’s foam carving and dying involved which just seems fascinating! I wonder if it’s like carving Ivory soap, like I did back in Girl Scouts? In any event, you can get a pattern kit for 3 puppets for only $149.00! It seems incredible affordable considering what you get. The foam itself is about $30 a sheet. Two sheets are included in the kit. Want a more affordable puppet? Try their Glorified Sock Pattern (think Kermit). The instuctions are only $19.99. Get that pattern here .

I Found this video on YouTube of puppet making.

Part 1

Part 2

And if foam carving seems a little too daunting, maybe you can still puppet with Shadow Puppets. MAKE: Magazine has instructions you can download here.Mine favorite Muppets are Dr. Teeth and The Electric Mayhem! They crack me up! When I was younger, they did nothing for me, but now I get it! So who are your Favorite Muppets?

I hope you all give puppet making a try! Let me know how it turns out.Happy Puppeteering!

I took the pledge
